Justine Thompson has investigated crooks and crashes on Sydney's beat, but on remote Macquarie Island, halfway to Antarctica, she had 50-knot winds, orcas, major refuelling operations and people to manage.

The outgoing station leader on subantarctic Macquarie Island has described the remote southern outpost as a "cross between Jurassic Park and a David Attenborough documentary".

"You are in the middle of nowhere, a little sliver of land in the middle of the Southern Ocean and there is no-one there but you," she said.Ms Thompson returned on the RSV Nuyina on Saturday after a major resupply effort on the island. "You're actually doing things that will inform us about how we can look after our planet a lot better.""You look after each other and allow each other to have bad days, we're human and that does happen," she said.

"It's a mix of weather all in one hour. It can go from sunshine to mist and fog and hail and the next thing you know, you've got snow."Expeditioners love visiting 'beautiful' Macquarie Island, except for the mouldy, asbestos-riddled accommodation
