A man allegedly armed with a knife has been shot by police after officers were conducting a welfare check in Coomera on the Gold Coast on Sunday afternoon.

Police attended a Bellagio Crescent address about 3.20pm following reports a man had threatened self-harm.Police said negotiators were notified to attend the scene and speak with the man.He was treated by paramedics before being transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation by the Ethical Standards Command is under way.
