Queensland's southern border residents hope law and order will be a priority of the state's new cross-border commissioner, Ian Leavers.
Life on the border can be "frustrating" for residents, according to the mayor of one of Queensland's southernmost councils.Share article
In appointing Ian Leavers, the Queensland government is following the lead of New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, which already have cross-border commissioners. Premier Steven Miles told parliament that Mr Leavers's "experience on the frontline, and his collaboration with emergency services, local, state and federal governments" made him "an ideal candidate" for the role."That goes for Goondiwindi, to the Gold Coast and right out to Cameron Corner."
"In communities that are separated by the width of a river, it's as if you're living on two separate planets," Goondiwindi Regional Council Mayor Lawrence Springborg said. While presenting the bill to parliament on Tuesday, Minister for Regional Development, Glenn Butcher said the role would draw on best practice from similar models already used in other Australian states.
