Besides the political imperative to blame “the other lot” for everything, the precise reason why Treasurer Jim Chalmers needed to deliver a “ministerial statement on the economy” to parliament last Thursday was never quite clear.
There was a global economy on “a precarious and perilous path” and a federal budget “bursting with waste and rorts”. Hardly reassuring stuff for a nervous electorate. This political theatre of releasing updated budget figures may be fun for politicians and journalists, but it’s the substance of economic reform plans that ultimately matter to voters.
