Polls close and counting begins in four NSW by-elections, which loom as an early litmus test for Premier Dominic Perrottet's leadership.
Polls have closed and counting has begun in four NSW by-elections, in what looms as an early litmus test for Premier Dominic Perrottet's leadership.
Mr Perrottet has held the state's top job for just four months, rising to power after Gladys Berejiklian's shock resignation, which came amid a corruption probe into her ex-boyfriend.Ms Berejiklian's old seat of Willoughby, on Sydney's north shore, is up for grabs tonight, as is the inner-west electorate of Strathfield.
But most of the action is expected to be in regional areas, where Labor is trying to win the seat of Bega for the first time. Former transport minister Andrew Constance resigned from the NSW parliament last year to concentrate on a tilt at federal politics. He was considered a high-profile MP, and with his personal popularity no longer a factor, Labor is optimistic about hauling in Bega's 6.9 per cent margin and turning it red.
