Former footballer Garry Sidebottom has died after a battle with cancer aged 64 leaving behind many footballing memories in an AFL career that spanned three clubs

Coaching legend Robert Walls says he is saddened by the news that former St Kilda, Geelong and Fitzroy footballer Garry Sidebottom had after a long battle with cancer, aged 64, describing him as "my favourite player to coach".

"He was just so popular with the boys there. He would puff his chest out and say 'follow me' and the boys loved him," Walls said.Sidebottom grew up in Western Australian where he played for Swan Districts before joining St Kilda in 1978. He played 54 games for the Saints and was skipper in 1980 before joining Geelong for one season where he played seven games.

Walls said everyone associated with Sidebottom at Fitzroy - who merged with the Brisbane Bears in 1996 to form the Brisbane Lions - would have great memories of him."He was a good country boy in a way. He had no tickets on himself. He was a knockabout bloke."
