A vacant copper smelter site at Port Kembla is up for sale but the operator says at least 300 homes nearby still have heavy metal contamination.

What's next?Gardening is one of Brigitte Pickett's favourite pastimes, but she says having her own backyard vegetable patch is too risky.

Testing would later reveal her home contained high levels of lead which, according to the National Health and Medical Research Council, can have harmful effects on the body."There was lead on the windowsills in two of the bedrooms … in the roof and a couple of bad spots in the backyard," Ms Pickett said.

It has been working on a "voluntary basis" since 2020 with the NSW EPA, NSW Health, Wollongong City Council and an independent site auditor to establish the extent of the off-site contamination."This was a long and difficult process as it coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, but included letter drops and in-person visits," Mr Wilson said.
