More than two weeks after a magnitude-7.3 earthquake struck Vanuatu, Port Vila's CBD remains closed as assessments reveal significant damage to buildings. While essential services have been restored and the state of emergency has lifted, the uncertainty surrounding the CBD's reopening poses a challenge for businesses and residents.

Port Vila 's Central Business District ( CBD ), usually bustling with holiday activity, remains closed to the public over two weeks after a magnitude-7.3 earthquake claimed 14 lives. The usually crowded sidewalks are empty, creating a surreal atmosphere for city residents. While Vanuatu 's week-long state of emergency has ended, Port Vila 's international airport has reopened, and electricity and water services have returned to over 95% of the city, the CBD 's reopening date remains uncertain.

Early building assessments reveal earthquake damage has rendered some CBD structures unsafe for occupancy. Vanuatu's caretaker disaster management minister, John Salong, stated that structural engineers will conduct further assessments, including examining several landmark buildings within the CBD. Major organizations, such as the National Bank of Vanuatu and the Vanuatu National Provident Fund, have relocated their offices to safer buildings outside the CBD. Port Vila's business owners, accustomed to recovering from frequent tropical cyclones, describe the earthquake's aftermath as distinct. Nambawan Cafe, a popular waterfront establishment, swiftly repaired its roof after damage from Tropical Cyclones Judy and Kevin earlier in 2023. However, owner Mr. Oswald notes the earthquake's aftermath on December 17th presents a unique challenge due to the ongoing uncertainty. The indefinite closure of the CBD, and consequently his cafe, hinders planning for repairs and new equipment. 'We have no real access into the business, and we'll have no customers for, I don't know how long - weeks, months,' he expressed
