A potato salad sold at supermarkets across southern Australia has been recalled over a listeria contamination.
The incubation period for listeriosis can be up to 70 days, but for most people is about three weeks. Infections can cause blood poisoning and inflammation of the brain, and in pregnant women it can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth.
Symptoms include fever and muscle aches, and sometimes nausea and diarrhoea. In serious cases it can lead to collapse and shock, and symptoms like a stiff neck, confusion, and a loss of balance. The NSW Food Authority said anyone concerned about their health should seek medical advice and return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. For further information people are urged to contact the Daly Potato Company. The listeria warning comes after the NSW Food Authority also urged people to ensure food is stored and handled correctly to avoid salmonella food poisoning.
"The most common causes of salmonellosis outbreaks are eating food containing raw or undercooked eggs and not carefully separating raw food from cooked food," she said last week. Ms Glasgow said if food that is normally refrigerated has been sitting out for more than two hours, it should be binned.
