When students returned to Soldiers Settlement Public School in Matraville, teachers noticed the disruption had affected their learning. It wasn’t just the students who were struggling before the lockdown; others had slipped behind, too.

Soldiers Settlement Public School students have performed strongly in NAPLAN thanks to COVID tutoring.“The department sets targets you have to achieve every year, and we exceeded the three-year target this year,” Ms Palaitis said. “I think it was because we employed extra staff under the COVID [intensive learning] program.”

The report found one of the biggest challenges to the program was staffing. Funding to allow schools to hire casual teachers for the program led to problems hiring them for other reasons. “Existing shortages of casual teachers had been exacerbated by the program,” the report said.
