India has launched an extraordinary protest around Olympic wrestler Vinesh Phogat after she was disqualified from the gold medal match for being 100 grams over the 50kg weight limit. And in a heartbreaking twist, the DQ extended to the entire competition, meaning she did not receive any medal, with an appeal now lodged in an attempt to claim silver.

Images shared on social media showed an exhausted Phogat slumped on the ground during her last-ditch effort to make weight. “It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat,” the Indian team said. “Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. “The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy.
