Tasmania will have a team in the AFL competition after the 18 clubs agreed to the entry of a 19th team.

The new Tasmanian team, set to join the AFL most likely from 2028, will have the right to bid for the sons of any former Tasmanian AFL player, as well as a $1 million pool to fund sign-on bonuses to attract players.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese speaks during a press conference in Hobart on Saturday alongside Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff .Sources with knowledge of the situation said it was still be finalised, but it was expected the ex-Tasmanian player would still have to have played a minimum of 100 AFL games as the current rules require for a player to qualify as a potential father-son.

It has not yet been decided if there will be restrictions on how few, or how many players, the fund would be used for, but the AFL’s preference was that the money would not just be used on one player. There was no vote required of the presidents. They simply agreed to the team’s entry on Tuesday, having already reached a position of unanimous support beforehand.
