Former defence minister Stephen Smith and former military chief Angus Houston will lead a review into the Defence Force’s posture, structure and acquisitions.
Some planned defence acquisitions could be axed, new projects given funding and troops shifted across the country under a sweeping review into the Australian Defence Force led by former defence minister Stephen Smith and former military chief Angus Houston., Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Defence Minister Richard Marles will announce on Wednesday that the pair will conduct the Defence Strategic Review, with a deadline of March 2023.
“Military modernisation, technological disruption and the risk of state-on-state conflict are complicating Australia’s strategic circumstances.” the terms of reference say.The timing of their report will complement the work of the AUKUS taskforce on the acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines, which is. The submarine report will determine which submarine will be acquired and the timeline for it, as well as any measures required to avoid a capability gap.
According to the terms of reference, the review will identify and prioritise the basing, infrastructure, disposition, logistics and security investments required by 2032-33 for the force.
