A murder charge against a 12-year-old girl over the stabbing death of a woman in Melbourne's inner-west last year has been withdrawn.

The girl, who can't be identified for legal reasons, was charged with murder after allegedly stabbing a 37-year-old woman to death in a Footscray apartment last November.The girl faced the Children's Court of Victoria today but no longer faces a charge of murder. In a statement, Victoria Police said it withdrew the charge following advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Police had earlier told the court the girl had allegedly carried out several violent attacks in the lead-up to the November incident.
