A bombshell report has highlighted critical logjam in the public healthcare system meaning hospitals have failed to adequately care for patients suffering from acute mental illnesses amid record high wait times and low bed capacity.
A report has exposed the logjam and low bed capacity in public hospital s leading to record high wait periods for mental health patients unable to receive timely treatments for critical conditions.
Dr Danielle McMullen, the federal AMA president, said the lack of specialised mental health beds is what leads to hospital logjams resulting in extended patient stays in emergency departments, distressing both the patient and their families. Once admitted to hospital, mental healthcare patients reportedly have a much longer stay than non-mental health patients"due to the complexity and fragility of their health at the point of admission".
"This report provides yet another piece of evidence pointing to the need for greater investment in Australia’s public hospital system," she said.
