Alan Joyce says Qantas has had “encouraging conversations” with the Labor government about setting up a biofuels hub in Australia.
Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has called on the new Labor government to support the establishment of a local sustainable aviation fuel industry, after the airline partnered with Airbus to invest up to $200 million in Australia.
He said the cost of air travel would remain elevated for the foreseeable future because of high commodity prices.“What’s happened is fuel prices have spiked and our fuel bill next year will be $1.8 billion more than it was before COVID. And of course airfares ... have to go up to meet that, but at the same time for still unbelievably low airfares out there.
“We’ve had some encouraging discussions with the incoming Australian government given their strong focus on emissions reduction and look forward to that progressing.”
