The package, announced on World Environment Day on Sunday, includes $24.6m to help protect south-east Queensland’s koalas from further decline.

A $40 million package to protect native species across Queensland has been announced by the state government and will include funding to help protect koalas.

Treasurer Cameron Dick and Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon announced the funding on Sunday morning. It will include $24.6 million to help protect koalas in south-east Queensland, alongside $2 million for wildlife hospitals, including the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital. A young koala is tagged and measured before being released into Carindale bushland as part of a University of Queensland research project in 2020.The Gold Coast-based hospital treats more than 14,000 wildlife animals annually before releasing them back into the wild.“Queensland is home to 85 per cent of Australia’s mammal population, 72 per cent of our native bird species, and 50 per cent of native reptiles and frogs,” the treasurer said.

Control of koala populations in south-east Queensland shifted from council to the state government in about mid-2020. The state government now co-ordinates koala protections under the five-year $4.48 million Koala Conservation Strategy.
