Qld doubles down on ‘scaremongering’ children COVID concerns | mattdennien
Queensland’s Labor government is doubling down on questioning the vulnerability of unvaccinated children in the context of Australia’s national COVID-19 reopening plan, after accusations it has been scaremongering.of COVID-19 only if they were younger than 12. There are no approved coronavirus vaccines for this age group.
Queensland-based federal Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews accused the Queensland government of “scaremongering” and disputing the advice of health experts. On Thursday, federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg labelled the Premier’s comments “deeply disappointing”.
Ms Palaszczuk ran off a range of headlines from Australian and international news outlets stating children were making up a larger portion of the infections, with increased hospitalisations, while those under 12 were not eligible for vaccines. One article referenced the United States’ medical regulator expecting vaccines being available for children by the end of 2021.
In a social media post, Ms Palaszczuk claimed Doherty Institute modelling predicted that even with 70 per cent vaccination coverage among over-16s, “80 people will die each day six months after the outbreak” without context, the figure was modelled on a situation with a reduced testing, tracing, isolation and quarantine effectiveness not being proposed under the plan.
