A total fire ban is in place for large parts of Queensland as emergency crews try to gain the upper hand on blazes raging across the state.

The severe fire danger rating is forecast for the Northern Goldfields, Upper Flinders, Central Highlands and Coalfields.

Temperatures are forecast to soar in areas of inland Queensland, eventually moving across the state's east coast. More than 60 fires are burning within containment lines and authorities are monitoring eight blazes which pose potential threats. Image: News Corp Australia
