A man who tried to save another man from a snake that had coiled around his ankle has died after being bitten multiple times at a centenary event at a central Queensland school.
Paramedics responded to a call about 6.30pm on Saturday at Koumala, south of Mackay, with reports that a man in his 60s had been bitten several times.An initial Queensland Ambulance Service report said the victim was bitten on the chest and arm while trying to uncoil the snake from the man’s ankle at Koumala State School’s centenary celebration. Later reports said he was bitten on the arm.
QAS Acting Deputy Commissioner Dr Claire Bertenshaw said bystanders performed CPR immediately after the man collapsed. “The reports are, he was with a friend. They were actually at a 100-year celebration for the school. The snake was around his friend’s leg and he was helping to remove that snake,” she said.“It is really hard to say with any certainty what snake it was, and it’s very hard for us to actually identify snakes,” she said.“From the symptoms the patient had and the cardiac collapse, it would be more than likely a brown snake, but again, that’s just a guess.
She advised anyone who gets bitten to lie down and move as little as possible, apply a pressure immobilisation bandage to the affected area, and call for help.
