Queensland will end the year with 11,697 active COVID-19 cases, after a record 3118 new cases were reported on Friday.
The end-of-year surge in a state that had been, to this point, relatively untouched by the pandemic, has been driven largely by the highly infectious but milder Omicron strain of the virus. It was that relative mildness, coupled with a full vaccination rate of 86.37 per cent of the eligible population, that Queensland Chief Health Officer John Gerrard cited as a silver lining to the high case numbers.
Dr Gerrard said there was one male patient in a Queensland intensive care unit. The man was not on a ventilator, he said, and was infected with the Deltra strain. He was fully vaccinated. The Chief Health Officer said new testing guidelines had already reduced testing queues in the state.More to come...
