Premier David Crisafulli confirmed his government will repeal the laws after making the promise ahead of Queensland's state election. At the time, now Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie told parliament the Labor Party had "given up on the war on drugs". The QPS said it freed up hours of police time "to focus on serious drug offending such as drug supply, trafficking and manufacturing".

Mr Taylor said the laws had not been operational for long enough to see how they played out in the community."We would really encourage the government to keep this program in place and see the outcomes, which we know will be positive because we have seen it in other jurisdictions," he said. The new laws mean police will issue a warning for first-time minor drug possession and offer a place in a diversionary program.
