The floodwaters have receded across southeast Queensland, but emergency response agencies are warning people will need help for months to come – particularly when it comes to housing.

The newly appointed coordinator of Queensland's flood recovery effort is warning the disaster will take a long time to get over.Many flood victims are wondering where they will be living next"This is not a days and weeks [operation], this is months and years," Major General Jake Ellwood told ABC's 7.30.Making sure people can safely access their properties remains an immediate priority.

While the Queensland government is providing additional emergency accommodation, Major General Ellwood acknowledged that housing was going to be a big issue in the coming months. "It is, I know, very, very difficult," said Vikki Wilkes, housing coordinator with the Kingston East Neighbourhood Group."There are very limited areas we can refer on to."Lindel Walters says there will be less housing for a longer period as residents rebuild.
