Queensland 's new premier is making good on a pre-election promise to introduce laws to imprison children who commit "adult crimes" to "adult time" with legislation being drafted right now.So, under these new laws, a 10-year-old who commits murder will be subject to life imprisonment."They'd be subject to the same processes in the court as an adult would be ... potentially they could end up with the maximum penalty under those circumstances.
It includes establishing youth diversion programs, removing the concept that detention should be used as a last resort, and emphasising victims in the criminal justice system."I'll never walk away from the stronger laws," he says. She says the new laws amount to "a dysfunctional slogan that dehumanised children and did not represent good law in accordance with established empirical evidence"."We want to ensure that any change is able to be subject to scrutiny by experts, including us," she says.The ABC has asked a mathematician to explain how using statistics can form a narrative that may not show the full story.
