Reconciliation Week is celebrated in late May and early June, to recognise the 1967 referendum and Mabo native title decision.On May 27, 1967, Aboriginal Australians were recognised in the most successful referendum held in Australia’s history. This referendum saw 90 per cent of Australians vote towards creating powers for the government to recognise Aboriginal people in law and count them in the census.
In Judaism, there is a concept of recognising one’s wrongdoing and apologising before one can move on and have the other party forgive you. This is known as “Teshuvah” – repenting for any prior transgressions. The final step in repairing prior misconduct is to choose to act differently if the same set of circumstances occur.
