More than 100 venomous red-bellied black snakes were found in a backyard mulch pile in Sydney's west, marking the largest snake find in the history of a local snake catching company.
Snake catchers in Sydney 's west have made a record-breaking discovery, capturing 102 red-bellied black snakes from a backyard nest. The homeowners at Horsley Park first noticed snakes disappearing into a mulch pile over the past two weeks. After their dog was bitten, they called in Reptile Relocation Sydney . Cory Kerewaro, owner of the company, said his colleague Dylan arrived expecting to remove four snakes, but instead pulled out just over 40.
Upon further inspection, they discovered the captured females had given birth, bringing the total count to 102. Kerewaro said the sheer number of snakes required the homeowners' assistance in rounding them up. 'They ended up actually chugging on a pair of boots and long pants and helped rake through the pile,' he said. 'If they didn't help, we probably would have called it a day and went back the next day to keep going.' This discovery is being hailed as the biggest snake find in Kerewaro's company's history. Researchers are now examining the event, and Kerewaro believes it will be documented in scientific papers. He said, 'I've spoken to some colleagues and guys who write scientific papers … and this is definitely something that is going to be recorded and used. We don't know anyone else that's found such a large volume of red-bellied black snakes in one spot.' Red-bellied black snakes are common in eastern New South Wales and Victoria but are venomous. Bites can cause swelling, nausea, vomiting, headache, diarrhea, and muscle pain. Kerewaro emphasizes the danger, saying, 'I know colleagues that have had their fingers chopped off, amputated after the bite. It can be quite serious.' Thankfully, Kerewaro's company has received permission from National Parks and Wildlife to release the snakes into a remote area of the National Park, ensuring public safety
