A referee and a student were hurt when strong winds toppled a light pole during a high school soccer match in Arkansas, striking them on the field, shocking video shows.
Clarksville Superintendent David Hopkins said he felt “very blessed” that Resendez’s injuries weren’t more significant — or even fatal. “It was a bad, bad situation,” Hopkins said. “We’re just very grateful that we got out of this with injuries.
” Resendez and the student were rushed from the field in an ambulance to a nearby hospital. The unidentified student, who suffered superficial wounds to his head and legs, has since been released, Hopkins said. Parent Danielle Meyer, who attended the match, said the strong winds were noticeable as soon as she stepped onto the field. “It seemed like it was 40 or 50 miles per hour,” Meyer told KFSM. “I mean, even the goalposts where they play football were swaying back and forth.”Tyler Stroud said he arrived at the field shortly after the pole crashed down just before 3pm as several teams from across Arkansas prepared for a soccer tournament. “When I got up there, I seen that pole laying on the ground and a bunch of people, you know, freaking out, saying the pole was laying on somebody and all that,” Stroud told the station. The football stadium and adjacent baseball field at Clarksville High School will remain closed until all poles at the school can be inspected and repaired if necessary, district officials said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those injured today,” district officials said in a statement released Monday.LOOK: Light pole fell on two people in middle of soccer game.
