New South Wales sheep farmer Charles Massy became an advocate for regenerative farming during the 1980s drought, which he said forced him to radically change his approach to life on the land.

ABC South East NSW: Bill BrownIn his book Call of the Reed Warbler: A New Agriculture A New Earth, Dr Massy charted his own mistakes and the lessons he learned while also highlighting the stories of regenerative agriculture pioneers.

For some farmers this provides an incentive to feed animals and keep stocking rates high in the anticipation that any widespread rain would see the price of livestock skyrocket. Mr Massy has already reduced his flock to 20 per cent of what he would usually run and in the coming weeks expects that to halve again.Space to play or pause, M to mute, left and right arrows to seek, up and down arrows for volume.For many farmers destocking is a tough decision because in some cases the livestock genetics have been developed over 40 years.
