Sky News host Chris Smith says the latest attempt for the Republic Movement to get the public to break away from the monarchy is “dead and buried already”.

The proposed framework for choosing a president involves each state and territory nominating a candidate, the federal parliament nominating three, and having the public vote on the 11 nominees.

“Not surprisingly, arch-republicans Labor leaders Paul Keating and Bob Carr have both given it the thumbs down,” he said. “Keating says the model creates a dangerous framework, which replicates a US-style Presidency while Carr claims it places the President, in a superior position, to that of the Prime Minister.”

Mr Smith said the only model “capable of gaining widespread national support” is the one Australia already has if the monarchy is removed.
