“These costs of living impacts are real, and the Australian government understands that,” Mr Morrison said. “[But] the budget is in a couple of weeks, and that’s when announcements are made about matters in relation to the budget. I don’t intend to engage in pre-budget speculation on this matter.” Despite growing calls from motorists and some state premiers to scrap the excise tax, some experts say it simply would be a band-aid solution that will lead to funding issues in the future.
“We can understand why there would be need to look at how we can reduce the cost of living pressures with petrol prices now at record highs,” NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury told“But the problem with the excise is this, the excise is designed to raise revenue for motorists who are using the road network and that revenue goes back into fixing the roads, it goes back into supporting local and regional councils so they can maintain their roads to a safe standard.
