We speak to Chris Brewster, stunt coordinator and second unit director of Renfield, about designing the action scenes for the supernatural film and how Nick Cage & Nicholas Hoult each approached their characters:
One man has long had a rather acrimonious relationship with his vampire master, Count Dracula, and Chris McKay's Renfield takes that into all new territory. Renfield is now playing in theaters, with Nicholas Hoult playing the titular role of the familiar Renfield and Nicolas Cage portraying Dracula. Chris Brewster also steps aboard Renfield as stunt coordinator and second unit director.
We speak to Chris Brewster on the making of Renfield, designing the action scenes for the movie's supernatural vampire fights and stunts, and the different approaches Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage took to creating the movements and combat styles of their characters. Chris Brewster: Before Renfield, I worked with Chris McKay and his team on The Tomorrow War, and just instantly connected and bonded with them.
Had you ever done anything prior to Renfield that you would say was comparable to it, or what would you say was the closest previous baseline to it for you? Chris Brewster: Well, literally working with both Nic and Nic was just legendary! They are both incredible, amazing actors! Nic Cage, from day one, just brought such an A-game. I was sitting with Chris McKay in the office, and he was about to do a Zoom with Nic Cage, and he asked me to stick around to talk about how we all envisioned Dracula moving and just different physical mannerisms and everything.
Chris Brewster: Well, the difference being we don't ever choreograph just movement-based choreography. Everything we do, we like to be story-driven and character-driven, so the first element with both Nic was to get an understanding for how they saw their characters, starting with just chatting in both cases. We had three months to understand Nic Hoult's view of Renfield, and he has a very big arc throughout the story and has varying levels of superpowers.
Personally, I think the piece of action that was the most fun to explore, create, and build was the apartment fight, because it is so off-the-wall and unlike anything you've ever seen before, from the jumping level to level, to ripping bodies apart and using body parts as weapons, it's amazing, and it's unlike anything I've ever gotten to design and choreograph before!
