Moto GP: Jorge Martin has won his maiden Moto GP World Championship after a third place finish in Barcelona.

It’s the appropriate textual summation of the 2024 MotoGP season, ellipsis essential . As the two title protagonists for a second straight year waged war up front, the rest were mere supporting actors in a high-speed soap opera . So much so that the rest were, at a minimum, three entire Grands Prix weekend’s worth of points adrift of the world championship ’s top dogs after 20 rounds. It’s a chasm that, in theory, should make a top 10 rider ranking for 2024 simple, but in reality is anything but.

The points table offers insight into any proposed hierarchy, but is a suggestion more than an accepted script. Stats don’t factor in context or nuance. Numbers don’t correlate with expectation and pedigree. Reputations can be made, bolstered, ruined. Two riders who finished inside the top 10 in the standings? Pass. Two others who typically finish in that range but didn’t this year? No thanks. A rider who finished outside of the top 15? Come on in.

Simply, the Frenchman did the most with the least of the four riders who had the misfortune of campaigning the RC213V this season, one where Honda’s downturn to become MotoGP’s doormat was laid bare with Marc Marquez leaving for Ducati. Honda scored 75 points in the constructors’ standings – Yamaha, second-last, was 49 points up the road – while its two teams combined to score fewer points than the next lowest-scoring outfit, first-year Aprilia team Trackhouse Racing.
