A firefighting aircraft has crashed while battling blazes in WA’s Great Southern. 7NEWS
The 737 air tanker was operating over the Fitzgerald River National Park, south of Ravensthorpe and near Hopetoun, when it came down about 4pm on Monday.Watch the latest news and stream for free on“The two pilots on board were retrieved from the crash site by helicopter and airlifted to Ravensthorpe Airport,” WA Police said Monday evening.What triggered the plane to come down is so far unclear and Australian Transport Safety Bureau officers will attend the crash site to conduct an investigation.
The aircraft — with its huge payload of more than 15,000 litres — has proven a game-changer for firefighters. The emergency came as crews battled multiple fires within the Fitzgerald River National Park on Monday.Dozens of firefighters are on the ground working to tame the fires, which are understood to have been sparked by lightning.
