Rescuers tell of 'horrific' injuries in grim White Island operation
Police closed the door on the possibility that anyone may have survived White Island's eruption after surveillance revealed the grisly reality of the crater's surface.
Most of those injured also sustained lung damage, which left them on ventilators. Authorities acknowledged that some of the victims might not survive. Emergency department physician Dr John Bonning said scenes at Whakatāne Hospital in the aftermath of the volcanic eruption were like a "war zone".The eruption sparked a desperate rescue effort to pull survivors off the island.
