The New Zealand Defence Force has just released images of the daring operation to recover the bodies of six people who tragically died in the eruption on Whakaari/White Island. 9News Latest here:
Toxic gas and the risk on another eruption hampered efforts to recover the bodies.Colonel Ryan McKinstry said the New Zealand Defence Force was united in our "grief for those who have been killed, injured and traumatised" by the events on the island.There were fears toxic gas remaining near the eruption site could prove fatal if inhaled.The recovery team wore hazardous material suits to protect themselves from toxic gases.
She confirmed six bodies were removed from the island this morning in a "extremely complex, extremely dangerous" operation following Monday's deadly eruption."We will know more once we hear the analysis of those who were on the island this morning," she said.Formal identification of the bodies will now need to take place.Ms Payne said the families of those killed were going through "desperation and distress".
He said little was known about volcanic burns but doctors believed many of the injuries were caused by sulphuric acid. Two patients at Concord Hospital are in a critical condition, another is stable, and two more are also being treated there.Three more survivors have been flown to Melbourne for treatment.
