Experts suggest housing price bubbles that have popped up in Sydney regions in the past 20 years may be a thing of the past as immigration slows and COVID-19 lifestyle changes prompt people to move away from the city.
They defined bubbles as moments when house prices rise without a corresponding increase in rents. Associate Professor said bubbles were seen from 2001 to 2005 and from 2014 to 2016 across western Sydney. Brendan Coates from the Grattan Institute said it was unlikely Sydney or Melbourne would experience property price bubbles in the near future as "people have been voting with their feet" and moving out of inner-city areas to the suburbs or regional centres.
