A 5.62-metre great white female shark carrying four young pups was found dead on a regional Queensland drumline in August. She was the size of a dual-cab ute and scientists are now doing genetic studies on her body.
Researchers are looking at the genetic tissue of a 5.62-metre female shark found dead on a smart drumline near Gladstone earlier this year.Research is underway on the largest great white shark ever caught on a Queensland drumline.
"We know that they can grow bigger than that, but it's pretty rare to catch them at that size in the program and in this part of the state," Dr Scott-Holland said. The department said it was the largest white shark caught in the Queensland Shark Control Program since it was introduced in 1962.Humane Society International Australia marine campaigner Lauren Sandeman was astonished at the size.
"We want to get the most that we can out of this unique opportunity to study such a large animal," Dr Scott-Holland said. This year, 1,260 animals have been caught across Queensland through the smart drumline program. 1,154 of those were sharks. A catch and alert drumline trial was introduced at four beaches on the Capricorn Coast in September 2021.
Target shark species caught on Queensland smart drumlines outside the UNESCO World Heritage area are removed and euthanased.
