The Baloone Shire mayor is proud of how Dirranbandi locals pulled together and supported one another through the emergency, declaring it now safe to return.

On Wednesday afternoon, authorities said the emergency situation in Dirranbandi was "de-escalating" and the fires were contained.Residents of Dirranbandi in south-west Queensland have been cleared to return home after a dangerous blaze saw them evacuated overnight.

"Ergon advised they have restored full power to Dirranbandi and residents are advised to check electrical appliances on their return home."First responder crews, as well as generators, are expected to remain on-site to support the process of rebooting power for the 422 Ergon customers that have been impacted, and the bore water supply will be shifted to a "blended water supply" on Thursday.

They evacuated around midnight and arrived in St George at 2am Wednesday, sleeping in their car at the local showgrounds."I'm tired, had bugger all sleep, a long night,," Mr Nichols said.
