The Buca di Beppo restaurant in Westlake closed suddenly last month. WESTLAKE, Ohio – There has been a restaurant at the corner of Fernwood Drive and Detroit Road in Westlake much of the time since at least the 1930s., which was part of a national chain of kitschy Italian eateries that started in 1993. It wasn’t a five-star restaurant, but it was fun. I visited several times with family members or friends and always had a good meal and a good time.
Before Buca took over the corner location, another popular restaurant was a longtime fixture at 23575 Detroit Road: the Elzona Tavern. My family lived for several years at 1130 Fernwood Drive in the late 1950s and 1960s and I distinctly recall the Elzona. It was a mysterious place that I seldom visited. However, my dad and grandfather sometimes enjoyed some adult beverages in the lounge, much to my mother’s chagrin.
Eating out was a real treat for my family, so that Thanksgiving dinner was extra special. In fact, it was one of only two times in my entire life that I didn’t have a home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner at home or the home of a family member. And while my mom appreciated that she didn’t have to cook and clean up, she lamented having no leftovers to nibble on later that night or the next day.
One of the most unusual things to happen at the Elzona took place on March 29, 1939 when a man tried to shoot his ex-girlfriend. A Dover Township police officer wounded the man, according to a mention of the incident by the Cleveland Memory Project.
