In a week that began with WA's power supply under scrutiny, a $100 million proposal to pipe desalinated seawater to Kalgoorlie flew under the radar.
While many have tried to replicate it, the 600km Goldfields Water Pipeline remains WA's only long-distance piece of water infrastructure. In a week where the Cook government's ability to keep the lights on at the height of a sweltering summer came under scrutiny, multiple attempts to secure the water supply of WA's largest inland city understandably escaped the spotlight.
But it faces a few key obstacles that have tripped up multiple governments from both sides of WA's political spectrum. The plan envisioned a pipeline stretching from the Fitzroy River to Kalgoorlie, where it would have been sent down the existing pipeline to Perth.Fast forward to 2005, and a plan by then-opposition leader Colin Barnett replaced the pipeline with a canal, which would have stretched along the WA coast to Perth at a cost of $2 billion.
With those demands in mind, the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has become adept at recycling its available supply, which is then used to water parks, gardens, and other green areas around the city.
