Regional Express is planning for a future when its propeller-driven aircraft are powered by electricity, not fossil fuels.
Airline Regional Express has taken the first step towards converting part of its fleet of 61 Saab 340 aircraft from turbine power to electric, zero-emission propulsion after forming a strategic partnership with Australian aviation start-up Dovetail Electric Aviation.
“Australia, with its very high utilisation of regional aviation and large number of aircraft capable of conversion, is a perfect incubator for the electric aviation industry,” Mr Sharp said.“If we can access technology that allows us to replace fossil fuel with electricity, then we’ll help the country achieve its target emission reductions goals, but it also represents significant savings to our operations in future years.
Mr Sharp expected trials of the electrified aircraft to begin within two years and passengers that would take their first commercial electric flight this decade.Beyond Australia, Dovetail’s backers are eyeing a much larger global market for the conversion, certification and maintenance of electric aircraft.
