Under the agreement, Rio will pay $10 million a year into a Yindjibarndi nation-building fund on top of rail royalties. If rail royalties don’t reach $10 million in any year, the balance will be paid into the nation-building fund so that total payments never fall below $20 million.

Mr Woodley said the revised agreement with Rio was of great significance in terms of improving living standards and empowering Yindjibarndi people living in the town of Roebourne, where many houses are in disrepair and the community is battling social issues, and surrounding areas. “My hope is that we look back on this day and say today was a step in the road along to change, and that change is for better outcomes for Yindjibarndi people,” he said.
