Decarbonising Rio’s aluminium smelters is a priority when Kellie Parker talks to government. It was high on the agenda when she spoke to Carbon Challenge too.
Rio Tinto is one of the biggest power consumers in the National Electricity Market through its Tomago and Boyne aluminium smelters in NSW and Queensland respectively.
We’re confident that as the technology advances to industrial scale, you’ll be experiencing low-carbon aluminium in many more products in daily life, from the beer cans that you’ve mentioned to cars and mobile devices. We just recently signed an MOU with Ford toWhat is your message to the Senate about the Albanese government’s plan to legislate a 43 per cent cut to emissions by 2030?
In short, we’re after proposals that can competitively meet the energy needs of the three production assets in Gladstone – the Boyne smelter, the Yarwun alumina refinery and the Queensland Alumina refinery. What is the single biggest thing that Rio would like to see happen to help you decarbonise your mostly fossil fuel-powered aluminium smelters at Boyne near Gladstone and at Tomago near Newcastle?
Rio is going to spend billions building its own renewables in WA for its iron ore division, but in Queensland for the aluminium assets you seem to not want to own the renewable generation assets. Why the different approach in the two states?Gladstone is a big industrial precinct and if you are going to put in solar and wind for a smelter, you need to put in a lot of capacity, so there is additional capacity for other industries. And the more you put in, the cheaper it becomes.
Rio believes the coal-fired Gladstone Power Station can play a role in the energy transition in Queensland beyond 2030.What does the call for huge investment in renewable power for your Gladstone smelter mean for the Gladstone coal-fired power station you jointly own with NRG? Why can’t you just shut that power station now? It would get Rio to its emissions targets quicker.
