Threats include a risk to food supplies.

Invasive alien species cost the planet £335 billion in 2019 and are an ‘underappreciated, underestimated and often unacknowledged threat’, according to a new report into this global threat to nature.

The report has investigated the different types of alien species and how they affect ecosystems, the extent to which they threaten food, human health and livelihoods, how they spread between and within countries, as well as how effective control measures are on international and local scales. It is published by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services – also known as the IPCC of biodiversity.
