A regional councillor and former state Labor candidate is facing charges in a South Australian court involving serious sex and violence offences.

Following his election loss, he secured a Renmark Paringa councillor positionRenmark Paringa councillor Sim Singh-Malhi faced the Berri Magistrates Court — in the state's Riverland region — on the charges today.

Mr Singh-Malhi is also the one-time Labor candidate for Chaffey, who ran against Liberal MP Tim Whetstone in the 2018 state election.South Australian Labor leader Peter Malinauskas said he is pushing for Mr Singh-Malhi's eviction from the party.
