Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has described the former Liberal government's failed Robodebt scheme as a 'gross betrayal and a human tragedy' following the Royal Commission's blistering review into the scandal.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has addressed the Royal Commission's findings into the"extraordinary saga" of the former Liberal government's Robodebt scheme.
Ms Holmes explained her reasoning for not publicly naming the entities, saying it would"only lead to speculation" about the individuals involved in the scandal. The system was to ensure recipients of social security benefits were not under-reporting their income and therefore receiving too much in welfare payments.
"They gave evidence on their sons’ behalf, because their boys had died by suicide. Their stories are told in more detail below. The Commissioner also found the scheme was a"crude and cruel mechanism" rolled out by the government which made many vulnerable Australians feel like"criminals". "The Robodebt scheme was a gross betrayal and a human tragedy. It pursued debt recovery against Australians who, in many cases, had no debt to pay," he said. "Under the former Liberal government, this scheme unlawfully raised $1.76 billion in alleged debts against some 526,000 Australians. The Prime Minister also thanked the individuals who worked on the Royal Commission report and Australians who came forward to tell their stories.
Government Services Minister Bill Shorten also addressed the media about the report on Friday. Picture: Sky News Australia.
