One man received life-threatening injuries and another remains trapped following a rock fall at Ballarat Gold Mine on Wednesday. Ballarat Acting Inspector Lisa MacDougall said late on Wednesday night that the injured man was extracted by rescue teams and was assessed by Ambulance Victoria. He had received life-threatening injuries to his lower body area and he was airlifted to Melbourne for further medical treatment .

Earlier, Victoria Police said in a statement that the injured miner was taken to The Alfred in a serious condition. Macdougall said work was still under way to safely access the other miner who remained trapped under the rock fall. She said the incident occurred about 500 metres underground and about three kilometres into the mine, which is on Indicator Lane in Mount Clear just south of Ballarat. The family of the trapped miner had been notified by police, Macdougall said, and obviously, as we would all be, they are extremely distressed and concerned
