“Dennis always used to say: ‘it’s the male gaze, that’s what we’re examining’. When I read the role of Jimmy, I saw a misogynist and a narcissist, but if you stick with the story you may learn why someone ends up like that.” Egerton says. “I wanted to make him ugly but relatable, and Dennis so elegantly walks that line. It’s through this dance with the devil that Jimmy looks into the void and sees something of himself.

The lead director, Belgian filmmaker Michael R Roskam , never unduly moves the camera, and with similar assurance, the plot of the true crime drama interweaves telling threads. As well as the fraught dynamic between Keene and Hall, there’s a parallel outside investigation by McCauley and a dogged police detective, Brian Miller, played by Greg Kinnear.
