Roosters-Rabbitohs to open the new SFS as Matildas secure Canada match | Dominic Bossi
The Matildas will be one of the first teams to play at the new Sydney Football Stadium after securing a friendly against Olympic champions Canada at Moore Park on September 6, with confirmation the Sydney Roosters v South Sydney Rabbitohs round 25 NRL match will open the stadium.
The announcement ensures the Matildas will almost certainly be the first soccer match to be played at the $900 million new stadium. The deal to play Canada in Moore Park reflects the seismic growth of women’s football in recent years with the Matildas not having played at the old football stadium since the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
NSW minister for trade, tourism and major events Stuart Ayers confirmed the opening event at the new stadium will be the NRL match between the Roosters and Rabbitohs on September 2. That match was scheduled for the SCG but will be moved next door. The Wallabies will play South Africa on September 3 before the Matildas host Canada.
