In the NL, you've got the Braves, Dodgers and then, as Farhan Zaidi says, 'you’ve got what we view as a lot of parity.'
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Farhan Zaidi admits the obvious, and what virtually every projection model shows: The and should be the best teams in the National League. “And then,” the president of baseball operations said, “you’ve got what we view as a lot of parity.” At the start of March, the Giants projected to be near the bottom tier of teams that likely will compete for the three wild cards. The subsequent additions of free-agent third baseman and left-hander moved them closer to the top.
Scott Boras, the agent for both, said they turned down long-term deals elsewhere to accept short-term arrangements with opt-outs from the Giants. “Bob has actually cost me a lot of money this offseason,” Boras said. “I have players that really, really like playing for Bob.” The addition of Matt Chapman gives the Giants a four-time Gold Glove defender at third base. Melvin, replacing Gabe Kapler, could help account for an uptick in the team’s performance.
